When people next ask the question; 'Just how powerful can a Strat pickup be?' the answer is always "The Frostbites". This pickup set was created by simply seeing just how many winds we could get onto Strat flatwork (within the realms of reasonability - thinner wire would technically produce more, but would create a tonally horrid pickup).
The pickup set was created around the fruits of the experiment - the bridge. We were able to wind the bridge to a blisteringly hot 16k DCR! Usually 16k would create an unpleasant, muddy and congested pickup - but these pickups are hand wound meaning that much more extreme winds can be utilised and still sound good (more on hand winding later).

We wanted a bit of versatility in this pickup set - so the neck and middle are wound a bit cooler. We clearly couldn't wind them like vintage Strat pickups, because this would create a massive volume and tone difference, which would be completely unusable, but we've found a great compromise. The neck and middle are like hot rodded vintage Strat pickups. Wound with 43 awg to maintain Stratty character, but thin enough to fit the required number of winds on them to meet the bridge in output. They have an incredible chime to them like a vintage style single coil - far more than typically expected from a wind this hot, due to the hand winding. But turn up the dirt and they can also roar - keeping up with the aggression of the bridge pickup.

The bridge is an animal of it's own, and therefore is worthy of it's own paragraph. Built with the maximum number of 44 AWG winds and supplemented with a ferrous baseplate, this pickup has the grunt of a (hot) P90, and the clarity of a Tele bridge. This is truly a unique pickup. We've never heard anything like it before; it really sounds like a P90 and a Tele bridge have had a love child. This will produce absolutely crushing distortion tones and will never muddy up or lose it's single coil character - it's got the grit of a humbucker with the intricacy and nuisance of a single coil.

These pickups sound fantastic

I play alot of overdrive/fuzz/distortion heavy music and these pickups sound amazing, i usually really dislike the Stratocaster’s bridge pickup but it’s a whole other story with these, it absolutely rips, all while still having the character/treble of normal strat pickups, the neck doesn’t muddy up with distortion like with Humbuckers, they’re definitely unique pickups but they’re perfect for me. I wired it up with a 250K pot and while i like the sound, if you want less treble i’d recommend a 500K pot. They come wired with cloth pushback style wire that is great to work with, it makes getting neat connections easier.

They did take longer to be delivered (3 weeks instead of 2) but that was because the workshop was closed that week (i got a message after ordering), the customer service was very good with responses to my questions.

Overall i’m v happy with these pickups and i’ll definitely come to Alegree again if i’m looking for some premium handmade pickups.

Wow....as per the description and more!!

I bought these as a loaded pickguard for my MiM strat that just needed something more to let it compete with my Les Pauls without having to put in a hot bridge humbucker. I tend to play medium to high gain classic rock focussed on the bridge rather than neck end and needed something to give a bit more grit to my strat and bite and be less polite and mild-mannered.

What can I say - these pickups delivered - no longer do I have a muddy neck and a tame and polite bridge. These things have bite. They are indeed just like the description, they've turned my mellow polite strat into a bit of a beast that can keep up with and easily push past my Les Paul humbuckers and have turned my hardly-used guitar into my daily go to, but they are incredibly tameable as well with the volume pots giving a nice linear drop off.

Love them, great job Alegree!
