This pickup set was designed from customer demand!

Having seen the number of requests and the outstanding feedback from this pickup set, it seems silly not to make it an official set.

We've had many customers approaching me asking for a vintage styled P90 set that could be found all over the 1950s-1970s. It had to be clean, articulate, mellow and have just enough output to kick a valve amp into beautiful overdrive when pushed, but not any more, so that headroom is preserved.

Starting from the Murky Horizon neck pickup, Which was already in the ballpark of what we set out to achieve here, we had a head start. As clean and low gain work are (presumably) the primary uses for this set, the Murky Horizon neck could be a bit 'spiky' at either end of the EQ spectrum, which is great for clarity, but when you're playing clean and want a singing sustain reminiscent of the good old days, it just won't cut it. It's loaded it with alnico 2 magnets to smooth off the rough edges.

The Murky Horizon bridge is miles away from what this pickup set was made to recreate, so that design was tossed to one side. A new bridge build was in order. A vintage wind was created, a touch hotter than the neck to balance, but no more than was necessary to retain all the vintage goodness. To curb off a little bit of the excessive highs of the vintage wind, and to provide the singing sustain to match the neck, alnico 2 magnets were used once more.

Articulate without hype

This is a review of the neck Sea Smoke. I honestly don't have anything negative to say against it - there's a smoothness to the high-mids/top-end that I've only heard in the best P90s and this has it. Very jazzy and pure when clean, but with loads of harmonics when pushed: for me, this excels with low-feedback amp designs pushed into gritty territory. I found it initially sounded a touch muted in the top end, but then switching to my other pickups made them sound cheap and broken - instead, this pickup has a natural and smooth top end that sounds continuous with the rest of the frequency range. Oh, and the featureless 'no pole pieces' look is cool AF :-)

Sea Smoke Neck

My second lot of Alegree pickups - this time I ordered a Sea Smoke Neck pickup to pair with a SD Antiquity HB in the bridge of my 335 type semi hollow guitar. Once again, Alegree have proved how great their pickups are - the SS neck is expressive, dynamic and has a HUGE sound. No description would adequately express how great this pickup sounds. It has transformed this guitar and gives performance that can handle Jazz, al the way through to fuzz drenched rock

THRILLED.

Transformed my guitar from wall furniture to an inspiring tool

I bought a nice looking ES335 style guitar on the bay last year. It looked awesome, was finished very nicely and only costed a couple of hundred Euros. Unfortunately when it arrived it sounded loud but lifeless through an Amp. So I hardly played this guitar. When I heard of Alegree through Youtube I checked their website for P90 style PUs in humbucker format. Reading through the different descriptions I opted for the Sea Smoke humbucker sized P90s. The PUs arrived nicely packed and had a decent weight to them which indicated to me that they had plenty of magnet mass and wire. They fitted exactly where the original humbuckers were. After a couple of weeks playing them now I can honestly say that these PUs helped to transform my guitar into one of the finest in my collection of other american originals. The pickups are very rounded but without being boring. Dynamics and transparency are superb. Each string is distinguishable even when using Overdrive. The pickups sound great when played clean through a Fender style amp but they also sound very nice with an Overdrive pedal. Sound goes from twangy Rock n'Roll style (Bridge and Bridge + Neck PU) to roaring, more mids-oriented and long sustaining sounds (Neck PU) like a real old and expensive ES335s. The Noise level is very low which seems to helps for that great dynamic range. Overall this transformed my ES335 from just being wall furniture to what it really should be: A musicians inspiring and versatile tool. Thank you Alex!

Outstanding!

Ordered a set of humbucker sized sea smokes to go in my semi hollow guitar. I could not be more pleased. Articulate full bodied cleans, right the way through to fat raunchy rock tones - simply fantastic!
